Work on the protocol started in Spring 2005 at the University of
Chicago. VFER was generously funded through the Summer of Code program
in summer of 2005, and supported by Internet2 throughout the academic
year 2005-2006. During summer 2006, three new students began working
with VFER as part of Google's Summer of Code 2006 program to add new
features and to strengthen the existing implementation.
- Stanislav Shalunov
- Stas mentored the VFER project as part of Google's Summer of Code 2005. After the program, he supported and continued to mentor the project in 2005-2006, spending many hours on the phone discussing congestion control with Ivan. Stas is mentoring again as part of the Summer of Code 2006 program.
- Ivan Beschastnikh | SOC'05 Proposal
- Ivan started VFER as an independent school project and later received funding for it from Google and Internet2. He developed the current implementation and maintains the VFER codebase and this website. Ivan is a Summer of Code 2006 mentor for the project.
- Andrew Lake | SOC'06 Proposal, SOC'06 Report
- Andrew joined the project as part of the Summer of Code 2006 program. His project is to implement a dynamic Path MTU discovery algorithm for VFER described here. This algorithm will make VFER more robust in environments where PMTU is difficult to predict or changes often (at least once during a connection lifetime). This method is also robust in environment that do not respect ICMP messages which are usually necessary to determine PMTU.
- Abhijeet More | SOC'06 Proposal
- Abhijeet joined the project as part of the Summer of Code 2006 program. Abhijeet's project is to develop a simulator for VFER by developing an ns2 VFER module. This module will allow to prove certain desirable protocol behaviors and will also allow for rigorous and controlled experimentation with the VFER model.
- Nikolaus Rath | SOC'06 Proposal, SOC'06 Report
- Nikolaus joined the project as part of the Summer of Code 2006 program. Nikolaus' project is to implement public key authentication and encryption for VFER. The initial goal of the project is to do authentication with a parallel SSH session, while the larger goal is to develop support for encryption and authentication at the protocol level, negotiating the particulars during the protocol handshake.
- Matei Ripeanu
- Matei mentored the project while at the University of Chicago. Matei peer reviews the specs and provided initial direction for the project. The idea for the project was motivated as a possible solution to replace TCP as the transport protocol in a large overlay network used to distribute soft-state information. Matei was one of the authors for the paper that started it all.
